Description:
‘Pull Up a Chair’ by Julia Abbey
My work is intended to bring joy and it gave me great joy to paint this scene.
As with many of my paintings, ‘Pull Up A Chair ‘represents a table scene that I would love to have for real in my home. It is busy and a little chaotic whilst still maintaining some order.
The table is filled with a mixture of eclectic items and at this table you may sit down for a cup of coffee or a glass of liqueur whichever takes your fancy. The table being full represents abundance and enough for everyone to enjoy something – hence the size of the bundt cake! Everyone is welcome to the table, just pull up a chair, velvet of course!
I enjoy mixing modern artefacts with vintage, often spotting items to include at my local eclectic market, Dirty Janes in Bowral. I choose colours which are often bright and bold and add a pop of colour to the scene. I have a fascination in Persian rugs and I really like how they add interest, depth and colour to my paintings as well as a touch of the exotic! I try to include an Australian native flower in each of my work and very often a cake to make the scene feel homely and grounded here in Australia.
I am beginning to venture more into the quirky, and I am aware that this table is not structurally sound and would definitely wobble over in real life!
‘Pull Up A Chair’ represents how my work has grown from a small canvas with two items and a flower on a table to large, busy scene like this. I hope to paint even bigger and bolder in the future.
